Why agencies are unbundling their tech stacks in 2026

App agencies that managed 10+ clients used to pay for one-tool-per-job: AppFollow for ASO, Lokalise for translation, Fastlane for CI, RevenueCat for paywall. 2026 has seen agencies shed half their stack.

App development agencies — the studios that run 10 to 50 client apps each — have historically stacked specialized tools. AppFollow for ASO monitoring, Lokalise or Crowdin for translation, Fastlane scripts for CI, RevenueCat for paywall, Branch for attribution. A typical agency stack ran $1,200–$2,500/month per client just in tooling.

The unbundling pattern

Conversations with three agencies of varying sizes this spring reveal the same shift: they're consolidating. The driver isn't cost — it's ops complexity. Five different tools means five different APIs to integrate, five different sets of credentials per client, five different dashboards to monitor, and five different vendors when something breaks.

What's being shed first

Tools agencies drop first tend to be the ones where the value-per-dollar is hardest to articulate to the client. Generic strings localization (Lokalise) gets dropped for apps that ship in <10 languages. ASO monitoring (AppFollow, App Radar) gets dropped when the in-house ASO knowledge has matured enough to replace dashboards with manual quarterly reviews. Standalone screenshot tools get dropped in favor of in-house Figma libraries.

What stays

Tools that touch revenue (RevenueCat for subs, Stripe for billing) stay. Tools that do production work the agency can't easily replicate stay. Tools that handle App Store-specific automation (PPP pricing, AI metadata, ASC API push) increasingly fall into "production work" not "monitoring."

What this means for app builders

If you're an indie or solo founder building a tool, the leverage is in the production-work bucket, not the dashboard bucket. Agencies are buying tools that DO things (push prices, translate metadata, ship releases). They're cutting tools that SHOW things. The dashboards-only era of mobile growth tooling is consolidating into action-tools.
