Apple's App Store Featured selection — what gets picked in 2026

Today tab features remain the single biggest discovery surface for indie iOS apps. Three patterns have emerged about what Apple's editorial team is highlighting in 2026.

Being featured in App Store Today tab is still the most acquisition-impactful single event an iOS app can have. A "Game of the Day" or "App of the Day" slot routinely drives 50,000–200,000 downloads in 24 hours. Apple's editorial team does the selection by hand. What gets picked in 2026 follows three patterns more consistently than in past years.

Pattern 1 — Story over screenshots

Editorial increasingly favors apps with a clear human story: solo developer, unusual origin, niche audience served well. The screenshots matter, but the "why this exists" narrative matters more for editorial selection. Apps that submit a Featured Listing application without a story tend to get passed over even when the product is strong.

Pattern 2 — Localization for the featured market

If you want to be featured in Brazil, your Brazilian listing needs to be fully localized — name, subtitle, description, keywords, and screenshots with Portuguese text. Editorial teams check this. An apps with English-only Brazilian listing rarely gets the Brazilian Today slot even with strong category fit.

Pattern 3 — Active maintenance signal

Apple's editorial team uses release frequency as a signal of project health. Apps that ship updates every 4–8 weeks signal "alive," apps that haven't shipped in 6+ months signal "abandoned" — even if the product is functionally complete. Featured slots increasingly skew toward the actively-maintained.

What this means for app builders

If you're submitting a Featured Listing application, lead with story + localized listings for the target market + recent release cadence. The product quality matters but it's not the differentiator at the editorial selection step — the differentiator is whether your application reads like an indie story Apple wants to tell.
