App Store search ranking factors that actually moved in 2026

Phiture, AppFollow, and AppTweak independently identified the same three ASO ranking-factor shifts in their 2026 quarterly reports. Title keyword density, subtitle keyword presence, and ratings recency all moved.

Apple doesn't publish App Store search ranking factors. The industry reconstructs them from observational data on ranking changes — the leading ASO consultancies (Phiture, AppFollow, AppTweak) all run continuous test panels of test apps and observe what ranking moves correlate with what changes. Their 2026 Q1 reports independently surface the same three shifts.

Shift 1 — Title keyword density

Apple has long penalized keyword stuffing in app names, but the threshold tightened this spring. Apps with more than two non-brand keywords in the title (e.g. "MyApp · Photo Editor · Image Filter · Pic Effects") now consistently underperform same-category competitors with cleaner titles ("MyApp — Photo Editor"). The rule of thumb that's emerged: brand name + one or at most two keywords. More than that and you lose.

Shift 2 — Subtitle keyword presence

The subtitle field (30 chars, below the app name) has gained ranking weight. Apps that include their primary category keyword in the subtitle now consistently outrank apps with creative-but-non-keyword subtitles in that category's search. For a fitness app, "Daily workouts & runs" outranks "Move better, live well" for the queries that matter.

Shift 3 — Ratings recency

Apple has long weighted overall rating count. The 2026 shift is toward recency — ratings from the last 90 days carry more weight than older ones. Apps with strong historical ratings but declining recent volume have started slipping. The implication: review prompts should be ongoing, not concentrated at launch.

What this means for app builders

Audit three things in the next week: title (drop the keyword stuffing if you have it), subtitle (does it contain your primary category keyword?), and in-app review prompt frequency (is it firing regularly, not just at first install?). These three account for the majority of 2026 ranking moves the consultancies have measured.
