iPhone Duo Is Out: The App Store Screenshot and Layout Checklist
Apple's first foldable iPhone landed September 9 with a 7.6-inch inner display at a new 1.42:1 aspect ratio — apps that haven't updated risk letterboxing on a $1,999 device. Here's the Q4 checklist.
The iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable iPhone, shipped on September 9, 2026 alongside iOS 27 — and it introduced a new asset problem for every developer who hasn't updated since launch. Apps without explicit Duo support may render letterboxed on the inner display, a 7.6-inch canvas Apple has positioned as its most premium iPhone screen to date. With Q4 bearing down, the window to fix this before it costs you ratings or an editorial feature slot is closing.
Two Displays, Two New Screenshot Sizes
The iPhone Duo ships with two distinct screens. The outer (cover) display is a familiar 5.4-inch footprint at 1398 × 2034 pixels. The inner display is the new territory: 7.6 inches at 2007 × 2853 pixels, with an aspect ratio of approximately 1.42:1.
That 1.42:1 ratio is the unusual number. Standard iPhones run roughly 2.16:1 — tall and narrow. The Duo's inner display is nearly square by comparison. At UIKit points (3× scale), the inner canvas works out to approximately 669 × 951 points — new territory for any app that anchors layouts to specific CGSize assumptions.
| Display | Physical size | Resolution | Aspect ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outer (cover) | 5.4 in | 1398 × 2034 px | ~1:1.45 |
| Inner (main) | 7.6 in | 2007 × 2853 px | ~1:1.42 |
Apple now lists iPhone Duo as a distinct screenshot category in App Store Connect. Required sizes are 1398 × 2034 px (outer display) and 2007 × 2853 px (inner display), both in portrait and landscape. Reports from developer forums suggest the App Store Connect uploader had not yet exposed a dedicated Duo slot as of the device's launch — the largest iPhone entry remained APP_IPHONE_67 — but Apple has been updating tooling alongside the iOS 27.2 beta cycle. The third beta of iOS 27.2 landed on October 5, so this may resolve before month's end. Prepare your assets now so you can upload immediately when the slot opens.
Designing for the Near-Square Inner Display
The 1.42:1 inner canvas calls for a different visual approach than tall-portrait iPhone screenshots. Treat it closer to an iPad mini canvas:
- Feature callouts anchored at the very bottom of frame may land near the physical fold — shift them to center or upper third
- Horizontal copy that reads well on a standard iPhone can feel cramped at 1.42:1 — increase type size or reduce density
- If you already have iPad screenshots at 2048 × 2732, those layouts give you a head start
Apps that skip Duo assets risk blurry upscaled thumbnails on Duo product pages, and risk being passed over if Apple's editorial team weights Duo-readiness in featuring decisions — a reasonable assumption given Apple's history of spotlighting optimized apps around new hardware.
iOS 27 App Intents: The Siri AI Migration Clock Is Running
Beyond the hardware, iOS 27 brought an easy-to-miss developer change: Apple deprecated SiriKit at WWDC 2026. The stated support window is two to three years, but the preferred path for new Siri integration is App Intents 2.0 — which powers Siri AI's cross-app intelligence on iPhone 15 Pro and later. The new framework adds streaming responses for long-running actions, multi-turn follow-ups, and on-screen entity references (Siri can resolve "the third one" from what is visible on screen).
If your app uses SiriKit today, you don't need to migrate in Q4. But a Q4 binary is a natural moment to audit which intents you're using and map them to App Intents equivalents so you're not starting from scratch later.
EU note: Siri AI is not available in the European Union at iOS 27's launch due to regulatory constraints. If a significant share of your users are in Europe, plan on-boarding copy and feature flags accordingly — Apple has not announced a rollout timeline for EU Siri AI.
Your Q4 Action List
- Test inner-display layout — run your app in Simulator at 669 × 951 points and check for broken layouts or bottom-anchored UI that conflicts with the fold
- Prepare Duo screenshot assets — outer (1398 × 2034) and inner (2007 × 2853), portrait and landscape
- StoreKit smoke test on iOS 27.0.1 — Q4 is not the time to find a purchase-flow regression
- Audit SiriKit usage — the deadline isn't 2026, but flag it for your 2027 roadmap
If you're doing a Duo-ready screenshot refresh, updating all locales at the same time is far cheaper than revisiting them later. And if you're evaluating subscription pricing for the emerging markets where Duo adoption will be slowest, the PPP pricing calculator is a quick starting point.
