Mobile market growth report — emerging markets drove 60% of 2026 H1 growth
Sensor Tower's 2026 H1 mobile market report shows total App Store + Play Store consumer spend grew 9% YoY, with 60% of that growth coming from emerging markets. India, Brazil, and Indonesia led.
Sensor Tower's 2026 H1 mobile market report — the most-cited quarterly aggregate of App Store + Play Store consumer spend — shows total revenue growing 9% year-over-year. The interesting line in the report isn't the headline number; it's where the growth is coming from.
The geographic breakdown
~60% of 2026 H1 incremental growth came from emerging markets — India, Brazil, Indonesia, Turkey, Mexico, Argentina, and a handful of smaller markets in Southeast Asia. The US and Western European markets contributed ~25% of growth. Japan and Korea contributed ~10%. China (Apple's second-largest market) contributed ~5%.
What this means structurally
For the first time, indie iOS developers can credibly argue that their growth strategy should weight emerging markets more heavily than English-speaking markets. The combination of larger install bases + improving willingness-to-pay + (if you localize correctly) low competition makes emerging markets more accretive than developed ones on a per-marketing-dollar basis.
The catch: emerging market users monetize at a lower ARPU. So you need to play volume — get the install base, accept lower per-user revenue, and assume the long-term retention compounds.
The category-specific pattern
Categories where emerging markets are leading H1 growth: photo/video (8% growth, mostly India + SEA), education (12% growth, mostly Brazil + Mexico), social (15% growth, mostly Latin America). Categories where developed markets still lead: productivity (US + Western Europe drive ~70% of growth), gaming (split roughly evenly).
What this means for app builders
If your app sits in photo/video, education, or social, ignoring emerging markets in 2026 is leaving the majority of growth on the table. The combination of PPP-adjusted pricing + localized screenshots + localized metadata is the operational unlock. The market math has shifted; your tooling should follow.
